As Christians we are called to minister with our heads, hearts, and hands. One such initiative of serving the needy takes place annually in Atlanta, where churches come together for a weekend of pooling resources and reaching out to those in need.
DULUTH, Ga. (Sept. 17, 2007) — There is an unusual movement throughout metro Atlanta among churches, who are uniting across denominational, racial, and cultural boundaries to serve and make a positive impact in their communities, together. This movement is known as Unite!
Unite! is excited to announce a partnership this year with Hands on Atlanta, a non-profit organization that helps individuals, families, corporate and community groups find flexible volunteer opportunities at more than 500 service organizations and schools. Chip Sweney, Unite! Director, said, “Unite! and Hands on Atlanta both have a great desire to serve and make a positive impact throughout Atlanta, so we decided to make a difference together.”
On Oct. 6 and 7, Unite! and Hands on Atlanta expect to combine with more than 20,000 volunteers serving in more than 300 service projects during the fifth annual “Compassion in Action Weekend,” where churches throughout metro-Atlanta plan service projects and partner to serve the community together in a spirit of unity, sharing the love of Jesus Christ to those in need. Hands on Atlanta’s day of service is also on Oct. 6, and they will be combining their community projects with Unite. Compassion in Action Projects include: neighborhood food drives, making blankets for homeless people, home repair projects, public school landscape / clean up projects, and making welcome baskets for international refugees [video].
Unite! launched in 2003 when three churches, Hopewell Missionary Baptist of Norcross, Victory World Church of Norcross, and Perimeter Church of Duluth, decided that churches could make a much greater difference for the good of communities if they worked together, rather than individually. Today nearly 100 churches, throughout metro Atlanta, have committed to the vision of Unite!, which is “churches praying and serving together for community transformation.”
