Sister Donates Bone Marrow to Save Brothers … Twice

What a great story from a true hero, who happens to be the sister of one of the terrific guys in the children’s discipleship group I lead at church.

I am currently 12 years old and in the seventh grade. I love animals, riding horses, doing creative activities and hanging out with friends. I am also an older sister to John, Will and Matthew. I watch over them in all kinds of ways, but not just in the ways most big sisters do. In my case, I gave two of them my bone marrow.

All three of my brothers needed bone marrow transplants because of a very rare and serious condition called X-linked Lymphoproliferative Immune Disorder (XLP). When my family told me that the doctors wanted to take my blood to see if I was a match, I was nervous and confused. I was very young, so I didn’t really understand what it all meant, but I was happy to do it considering that it could save my brothers.

There was a one in four chance I’d be a match for each of them, but we beat the odds. …

…At the times that I donated, I was 8 and 9 years old.
