8 Questions to ask before Speaking or Teaching

A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to hear Francis Chan speak on communicating.  During his talk he gave a few questions that he asks himself every time before he gets up to speak.  I’ve taken these questions and changed them up a bit to fit what I do and I’ve added a question or two as well.

These questions are posted in my Bible and I see them and answer them every time before I get up to speak and while preparing my message for the week.  These questions keep me grounded and focused on what it really is God is having me do.

Feel free to change these up to fit what it is you do.

  1. Am I worried about what people think or about what God thinks about my message?
  2. Do I truly love the people Im speaking to?
  3. Am I accurately presenting the message?
  4. Am I depending on the Holy Spirit’s power or my own?
  5. Am I more in love with God when I’m teaching, or when I’m in private?
  6. Have I applied this message to my own life?
  7. Will this message draw attention to me or to God?
  8. Do the people really need this?

These questions could make or break you as a communicator or even as a small group leader when teaching your message.  Post these somewhere you’ll see them when prepping your message and try it out for a few weeks to see it how it goes.
