Tim Keller on the Purposes of Churches

Acts 29 has posted a brief piece by Tim Keller, who offers church planters insights to help clarify the purposes of the church based on the example of the early church in Acts 2:42-47.  Keller elaborates on the key purposes he sees in Scripture:

  • Worship & Prayer
  • Learning & Edification
  • Fellowship & Community
  • Outreach & Evangelism
  • Mercy & Social Concern

Our first thought is that most churches probably make an "A" or "B" on one or two of these, a "C" on one or two of these, and a "D" or "F" on the rest.  It’s so easy to admire and assemble with those who share our own personal gifts and inadvertently downplay the gifts others have.  Since the church is a collection of gifted people, it’s probably not surprising that many churches tend to focus their collective resources in one or two areas just as the individuals who comprise them do in their own lives.
